Bridal hairstyles and face shapes - How to chose wisely.

Your bridal hairstyle is one of the most important aspects of your wedding day and it is important that you look and feel your best. One of the ways to achieve this is to find a hairstyle that is complimentary to your face shape.

There are 8 basic face shapes which will play an important factor in how you chose to have your hair and make-up on not only your wedding day but on a daily basis and these are;
  • Oval
  • Square
  • Triangle
  • Heart
  • Diamond
  • Oblong
  • Rectangle
  • Round
If you are unsure what your face shape is, please check out my easy to follow guide, here.

OVAL

Those with an oval shaped face will find it difficult to go wrong as this shape is the easiest to style. You are lucky as anything should look good.

< Styles for you
I would recommend an updo, or half up/half down as you will look you best with hair pulled back off your face.

Avoid >
Wearing to much hair on your face as you want to show of your perfectly proportioned face.

SQUARE

As your jawline is so defined you will want to try a style that will help to soften it a little.

< Styles for you
Keeping the hair down is a great option for you, especially with some loose curls or waves around your face. If you are wanting an updo, I would recommend a style that is quite soft with some curly tendrils coming down at the front.

Avoid >
Pulling all your hair off your face as this will draw more attention to your jawline and make you face look boxy.

TRIANGLE

Those with a triangular shaped face are unique as it is a very rare face shape. As the jawline is quite wide and the forehead is narrow, the jawline can appear bottom heavy so to balance this out you are looking for a shape that will narrow your chin and widen your forehead.

< Styles for you
Styles that are fuller at the forehead and the temples will look great on you as it will balance out the width of a heavier chin. If you want to open up your cheek bones and forehead keep your hair behind your ears.

Avoid
Centre partings and blunt fringes as it will only emphasise the width of your jawline.

HEART / INVERTED TRIANGLE

The only difference between a heart shaped face and an inverted triangle shaped face is that a heart shaped face will have a widow's peak and to balance out the shape you are looking for a style that will narrow your forehead and widen your chin.

< Styles for you
A soft whispy fringe, long layers or a side parting with help draw attention to your eyes and slim down your forehead.
Avoid >
Short styles, strong angles and styles which have too much volume at the crown as they will make the top of your head look fuller and your chin chin look longer and pointier.

DIAMOND

With a diamond shaped face the cheek bone area is the widest part and the forehead and chin are narrow, to balance out the shape try a style which offers volume around the jawline.

< Styles for you
A style which has more width than volume will look great on you, the width should start below the cheekbones. An off centre parting with a side swept fringe or straight fringe will also look great as it will shorten the face.

Avoid >
Too much volume on top will make the face look longer and really short styles will exaggerate the diamond shape of the face.

OBLONG / RECTANGLE

Oblong / Rectangle face shapes are quite long so to balance out the shape you should try a style that has a shortening effect.

< Styles for you
A natural wave or curl will add width to your face and a fringe can also look great on you. If you want an updo, try leaving some curls down at the front or go for a style that will add volume to the sides rather than the top.
Avoid >
Too much volume on the top as this will make your face look even longer as will sleek, super straight hair. Long hair should also be avoided unless it is layered with the shortest layer falling at chin length.

ROUND

A round face is beautiful and there are many different styles that are complimentary. Round faced women are also lucky as they tend to age better than any other face shape as it tends to retain the fullness and softness of youth

< Styles for you
Keep layers long and if you want a fringe, go for something longer and sweep it to the side. If you are looking for an updo, something with lots of volume at the crown will look amazing as it will lengthen and slim down your face.

Avoid >
A short, blunt fringe will shorten your face. Layers that fall at the jawline can also add volume to the face and make it appear rounder.
